Helena Simon is a psychotherapist living in Ireland. In her presentation she introduces a somatic approach to understanding trauma and how past experiences can continue to shape our emotions, bodily responses and sense of safety in the present. Drawing on neuroscience and trauma therapy, she explores the relationship between memory, sensory awareness and dissociation, and how reconnecting with the body and the present moment can support healing. The presentation also includes a simple experiential grounding exercise.

Psychology, systemic councellor and solution focused trauma therapist from SUBUD Germany explains in a clear and accessible way what can turn an overwhelming experience into psychological trauma and how such experiences can activate powerful inner “emergency programmes”. She explores how these survival responses affect the brain, our emotions and behaviour, and why they may continue to influence our lives long after the original danger has passed. Elsa also shares practical approaches and strategies that can help us understand these reactions, regain a sense of safety and gradually integrate traumatic experiences in a healthier way – allowing us not only to cope with what has happened, but to live well despite it.
